Birmingham's '45 Christians' Helping Out in Brightmoor Neighborhood

Next week, a group of fourth- and fifth-grade students from the First United Methodist Church of Birmingham will be helping out in one of Detroit's most impoverished neighborhoods.

Thirteen fourth- and fifth-grade students from First United Methodist Church of Birmingham, along with seven adult volunteers, will participate in a two-day work event in Detroit’s Brightmoor neighborhood July 15-16.

The Brightmoor neighborhood on the western edge of Detroit is one of the city’s most economically depressed communities. Thirty percent of the residents have not graduated from high school and 79 percent live below the poverty line, with an average family income of less than $17,000 per year.

The children, known as “45 Christians,” will be nailing mural boards, previously painted by the students, over windows of vacant homes in the area. They will then be involved in weeding the community garden, cleaning the Brightmoor church and painting windows.
