Do something wonderful for yourself. Here’s a great opportunity to immerse yourself in a weekend of fine sewing, creativity, inspiration and learning. Get to know the incredibly talented, and fun, haute couture designer, Kenneth D. King, and enjoy this weekend with him. Bring your sewing friends and develop new friendships too. You may want to leave home behind and stay with other Getaway Weekend guests at the Radisson Kingsley Hotel.

    Meet Kenneth at the opening mixer and book signing. Get to know this New York based, haute couture designer, national educator, author, THREADS MAGAZINE Contributing Editor, and Adjunct Professor in the Couture Design Program of FIT- New York. He’s incredibly talented andlots of fun too.

  • "Demystifying The Creative Process": Lecture/Slides/Trunk Show/Demo

    Kenneth will help you unleash your creativity and build confidence. He believes that creativity is the opposite of fear. It is a process of exploration, inspiration, even mistakes and misfires, that go into the finished work. Let’s get into it and have some fun!

  • SATURDAY, MARCH 8 - All Day
    10 a.m. - 5 p.m. + Dinner

    Intermediate level sewing experience required.

    TAILORING: GET CREATIVE WITH YOUR
    FAVORITE JACKET PATTERN
     

    Lecture, Demo, & Slide Presentations

    • 10 am - 1 pm: "Options For Lapel Variations"

      Learn Kenneth's wizardry in designing variations that turn your favorite existing jacket pattern into a beautiful customized jacket. Beginning with a basic cardigan jacket front, you will learn shape and size of shawl or notched, single- or double-breasted lapels, and the tricks to adjust the neckline, size, and fit and determine proportions. See how to draft patterns for these options.

  • 1-2 p.m. BUFFET LUNCH

    Time to stretch and browse.

  • 2-5 p.m. "Construction Of New Lapel Designs"

    Kenneth teaches how you actually build and apply the new custom lapels. See how to select, cut, sew and apply the right materials and interfacing, with the correct tailoring construction techniques to produce couture results. As Kenneth says, "Knowledge is Power".

  • Group Dinner

    Dining at a nearby Royal Oak restaurant caps off a wonderful day with Kenneth and your new friends.

  • SUNDAY, MARCH 9: Separate morning and afternoon classes.

    Intermediate level sewing experience required.

    In this class, Kenneth covers all aspects of making a strapless garment, that performs as it should, looking fabulous, and secure and comfortable to wear. Starting with adjustments to the pattern, he goes step by step through to the finished garment, with samples of each stage. You’ll be able to apply this knowledge to high-waisted pants too. This class is ideal for evening wear designers and dressmakers, costume designers, educators and home sewers.

  • 1-2 p.m. Buffet Lunch (For students enrolled in BOTH a.m. AND p.m. classes)

  • 2-5 p.m. "NEW Cool Tricks"

    Hands-On Workshop (This Hands-On afternoon class can be purchased as an “A La Carte” registration ONLY if Full Weekend Package enrollment does not fill it (20 guests) by February 23. )

    Enrollment limited to 20 very lucky students. This is an afternoon to treasure!

    Use our Janome classroom sewing machines or bring your own. If you would like to use a classroom machine, you must request it when you register for the workshop. (16 sewing machines are available.)

    A priceless opportunity to Sit and Sew with Kenneth D. King and learn some of his fabulous "NEW Cool Tricks." You'll love these impressive techniques, from creating the embellishments that make Kenneth’s couture garments so amazing, to techniques for handling special fabrics for the finest results. You'll make samples of these Cool Tricks in the workshop to add to your special sewing repertoire: 

    1. SLOTTED SEAMS, an impressive, handsome construction detail that adds drama to simply-cut garments. 
    2. ENTRE DEUX, a bullion knot construction technique seen in double-cloth suspension jackets by Ralph Rucci, and in embellishments for other garments.
    3. BUBBLE TRIM, Kenneth’s wonderful, dimensional embellishment for collars, cuffs, edges, and more.
