Where to Receive the Flu Vaccine in Birmingham

It's that time of year again — flu season. If you're planning to get a vaccination, pharmacies and county clinics are listed.

It's that time of year again: time to think about getting a flu shot.

“The best way to prevent flu, a respiratory infection that results in over 200,000 hospitalization and 10,000 deaths annually," said Dr. Jeffrey Band, director of Infectious Disease at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, "is receipt of the safe and effective flu vaccine.”

This year, eight types of flu shots are approved in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has published a table with details on each of the shots. Always consult your primary health care provider regarding the type of shot and dosage that may work best for you.

  • For people 65 and older and for people who have weakened immune systems, there is an option for a high-dose flu shot that contains four times the amount of antigen contained in regular flu shots.
  • Some flu shots contain mercury-based preservatives, commonly called thimerosal, designed to prevent the growth of bacteria in the vaccine.
