What's Open and Closed in Birmingham This Christmas, New Year's

City offices, grocery stores and other places shorten hours for Christmas and New Year's.

Staying in town this Christmas or New Year's? Here's everything you might need to know about what's open and when:

City offices

, including the Clerk's Office, City Manager's Office and Finance Department, will be closed Friday-Monday for the Christmas holiday. Offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

City offices will also be closed Dec. 30-Jan. 2 for New Year's and will reopen at 8 a.m. Jan. 3.

Even though Christmas and New Year's Day fall on Sundays this year, the on Bowers Street will observe those holidays on the following Mondays. That means the post office will not be open this Monday or on Jan. 2, nor will there be any mail delivery or pickup on those days. The post office will reopen with normal business hours, 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m., on the following Tuesdays.

Trash collection will not be affected by Christmas or New Year's. Pickup will remain on schedule.

Around town

  • The will begin showing movies at 11 a.m. Christmas Day, with movies scheduled the rest of the day. The theater will operate as usual on New Year's Day as well.
  • will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day but will reopen with regular hours Monday. The library will be open during its regular hours on New Year's Eve but will be closed on New Year's Day.
  • The will be open from 10:30 a.m.-noon Christmas Eve but will closed Christmas Day. On New Year's Eve, the arena will be open from 10:30 a.m.-noon, then will be closed New Year's Day.
  • The on Lincoln Street will be open until noon Christmas Eve and then closed on Christmas. The YMCA will then be open until noon New Year's Eve and open until 3 p.m. on New Year's Day (perfect for jump-starting those New Year's resolutions).

Grocery stores

We all do it: Amid all the pre-Christmas hubbub, you forget to pick up milk at the grocery store.

Never fear: and are open until 5 p.m. Christmas Eve. Market Square will be open until 7 p.m. All three will be closed on Christmas.
