What's New: Senior Center Releases Lineup of Fall Activities, Classes

This fall, the Birmingham Area Seniors Center will be offering a senior expo and flu shot clinic, an open house and several new classes.

Fall activities at the Birmingham Area Seniors Center

  • Where: (BASCC)
  • Hours: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • Cost: Varies

For adults age 50 and older, there's no better resource than BASCC and this fall, the Birmingham- and Bloomfield-based senior learning center has a full lineup of events and activities.

BASCC Open House

  • When: 9:30 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. Sept. 20
  • Why Go: Share your enthusiasm for BASCC and bring a friend to the center for coffee and conversation. Tour the facility and see some classes and groups in action. Any BASCC member who recruits the most new member will receive $100 in BASCC Bucks, to be used toward any BASCC activity. Please RSVP by Sept. 14.

Senior Expo and Flu Shot Clinic

  • When: 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 2
  • Why Go: This year's expo will feature more than 50 exhibits about healthcare, consumer products, services and senior house alternatives. Parking is free and refreshments and other prizes will be available.

What's It Worth? Antique Appraisal-Buy Event

  • When: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 10
  • Why Go: Find out if that antique is worth as much as you thought. Have one item appraised for $6 or $15 for three items. The maximum is six items. 

New classes at BASCC: Fitness, Skype and more

  • Stability ball classes
    • When: 5:15-6:15 p.m. Tuesdays (10 classes)
    • Cost: $50 for members or $60 for non-members
    • Improve your balance, strengthen muslces and challenge your core while sitting and lying on a stability ball.
  • Take the "PATH" to better health
    • When: 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sept. 21, 28 and Oct. 5, 12, 19, 26
    • Cost: $15 for members or $20 for non-members
    • PATH, standing for "personal action toward health," is an uplifting six-week workshop designed to provide the skills you need to improve health and manage symptoms of various diseases, such as diabetes, anxiety or cancer. 
  • What's the hype about Skype?
    • When: 1 p.m. Oct. 24
    • Cost: Free
    • Talk to loved ones down the street or across the globe for free with Skype. Bart Giola, Baldwin Library's technology trainer, will teacher you how to set up a Skype account and utilize its phone and video capabilities.
