Weekend Planner: One Act Play Festival, Dancing for Dogs

Happening this weekend: a Summer Skincare Event at Plum Market and a Heartsaver CPR class.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do this weekend. We already know will be taking over downtown Birmingham, but Patch has the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time.

  • Why Go: Enjoy two farces, one fantasy comedy and one drama during the third annual One Act Play Festival this weekend at the Village Players. Each play is penned by four local playwrights, including those from Rochester Hills, Bloomfield Township and Royal Oak. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the door or early at www.­birmi­nghamvilla­geplayers.­com.

  • Why Go: Will you be shopping during this Saurday? Then stop by downtown Birmingham to check out the sounds of Callaghan Smerek, the 17-year-old singer/songwriter from Farmington Hills. Smerek, who will be writing for Colbie Caillat's next album, has video releases of her original material, "Hey You" and "Dangerous."

  • Where: Plum Market, 3675 W. Maple Rd. in Bloomfield Township
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: Visit the apothecary at Bloomfield Township's Plum Market for free mini makeovers, mini facials, skin consultations, samples, raffles and product demonstrations.

  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: Learn the basics of CPR at this life-saving class at the Birmingham Fire Department. Upon completion of this course, students receive an American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR AED Course Completion Card that is valid for two years.   • Where: Fred Astaire Dance Studio, 2172 Franklin Rd. in Bloomfield Hills
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: Help raise funds for Last Day Dog Rescue during Dancing for Dogs at Fred Astaire Dance Studio, where dog-lovers have the chance to meet and possibly adopt rescue dogs. There will also be mini private dance lessons for $10, ballroom performances plus animal training demonstrations. For more information, call 248-454-1715.
