Weekend Planner: Kensington Anniversary Party, First Grade First Card

Also happening this weekend: Opening night for the new exhibits at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center and the AAUW book sale.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do this weekend. Birmingham Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time.

  • Why Go: is five years old and they're celebrating with a "Cinco de Birmingham" party after each service. The party includes games, music, highlights from the past five years and "The Ridiculous Ultimate Nacho Station." Guests and family are invited.

  • Why Go: Friday is the opening night for the newest exhibits at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center (BBAC). The show features the work of mixed media artist Jacklyn Brickman, the Birmingham Society of Women Painters, encaustic painter Yolanda Sharpe and the work of BBAC teacher Todd Burroughs' adult students. The exhibit is on display until Oct. 5.

  • Why Go: To mark , Baldwin Public Library is hosting a First Grade, First Card event. All students entering the first grade within the Baldwin coverage area — including Birmingham, Beverly Hills, Franklin, Bingham Farms and Bloomfield Hills — will receive their first card, while also receiving a special gift from Friends of the Baldwin Public Library.

  • Where: Birmingham Masonic Temple (37357 Woodward Ave. in Bloomfield Hills)
  • Cost: AAUW guests must pay $10 admission from 2-5 p.m. Friday; Admission free all other days
  • Why Go: The AAUW will be holding its annual book sale this weekend to raise money for the Joyce Hanston Manby Research and Projects Grant. Come browse hundreds of quality used books, with a preview sale slated for Friday and a bag sale from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday. In addition, area teachers are welcome to take home up to $75 worth of books for their classrooms from 1-5 p.m. Saturday.

  • Where: Seligman Performing Arts Center (22305 W. 13 Mile Rd. in Beverly Hills)
  • Cost: $30-$60; student rush tickets are $10
  • Why Go: The legendary Julliard String Quartet will open the 69th season of the Chamber Music Society of Detroit this weekend at Beverly Hills' Seligman Performing Arts Center. Before the film, check out the world premiere of The Julliard String Quartet: Keeping Beethoven Contemporary, is open to ticket holders free of charge.
