Weekend Planner: It's Theater Season in Birmingham

The weekend is headlined by the opening of several area theater performances, including 'Grease,' 'Bye Bye Birdie,' 'Rent' and 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.'

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do this weekend. Birmingham Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time.


  1. When: 7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday; 2:30 p.m. Sunday
    Where:

    Why Go:
    Groves High School theater will be putting on a performance of Bye Bye Birdie as its fall musical. The 120-member cast will be made up entirely of Birmingham students, including those playing in the orchestra pit. Tickets are $10 per student and $12 for adults.

  2. When: 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday; 2 p.m. Sunday
    Where:

    Why Go:
    The Village Players' adaptation of the 1962 Ken Kesey is directed by Bev Dickenson and will run for two weekends. Tickets are $17 each, with a $1 processing fee if purchased at the Village Players website.

  3. When: 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday; 2 p.m. Sunday
    Where:

    Why Go:
    The Roeper Theatre Company presents RENT as its fall production, directed by Roeper's new artistic director Chi Wright. The show is intended for mature audiences. 

  4. When:
    10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday; 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday
    Where:
    Why Go: A cast of young area performers will let their voices be heard and kick up their heals in The Community House's adaptation of Tickets are $10 for kids' floor seating, $15 for general admission and $30 for reserved seats.

  5. When:
    7:30 p.m. Saturday
    Where:
    Why Go: Bradley Ellingboe, the Director of Choral Activities at the University of New Mexico and a bass-baritone soloist, will lead the Composer Festival choir of more than 100 voices Saturday evening in Birmingham. Ellingboe, who has won numerous awards for his choral compositions, also wrote Requiem for chorus and orchestra, which made its Carnegie Hall debut in 2010.
