Weekend Planner: Egg Hunts, Groves Variety Show

Also headling this weekend is the annual gala and Classical Brunch, both at The Community House.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do this weekend. Birmingham Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time.

  • Why Go: After a six-year hiatus, the Groves High School staff variety show is back this year. Named "The Groves Late Show," students and families can come out and see their favorite teacher or administrator sing, dance and who knows what else. "I’m sorry but if you miss it, you will have to live with the regret for the rest of your life," Groves principal Fred Proctor said. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, with proceeds going towards Groves staff member Wendy Wallace during her rehabilitation.

  • Why Go: Do you have your tickets? The Community House will be throwing their first annual gala Saturday night honoring area businessman David Trott. Trott is also the vice chairman on The Community House's board of directors. The black tie event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a VIP reception for gala sponsors, followed by a performance of the Detroit Symphony Youth Orchestra at 6 p.m. Dinner and dancing will follow, as well as a speech from keynote speaker Allan Gilmore, president of Wayne State University and former CFO and vice chairman of Ford Motor Company. Proceeds from the event will benefit outreach program of The Community House.

  • Where:
  • Why Go: The Social Club of Quarton Lake and the Quarton Lake Neighborhood Association will be sponsoring their annual Egg Hunt this Saturday. Activities include the hunt itself (make sure to bring a basket or some other kind of container), snacks as well as face painting, games and tattoos for the kids. The rain date is 1 p.m. Sunday.

  • When: 10 a.m. Saturday
  • Where:
  • Why Go: It's the 16th year for this Poppleton Park tradition, and any Birmingham family is invited. Participants are asked to supply at least one dozen plastic eggs per child, filled with wrapped candy, trinkets and pennies on Thursday and Friday to the home of Lisa and Richard Kelley at 950 Putney, off North Adams. Please separate and mark each dozen by age bracket for placement in separate areas for ages 0-3, 4-6 and 7 or older. Bring your own baskets.

  • When: Noon Sunday
  • Where:
  • Why Go: The Classical Brunch series picks up Sunday with a performance from Hai-Xin Wu on violin, Michael Klotz on viola and Robert deMaine on cello. Brunch begins at noon while the concert starts at 12:30 p.m. For tickets, visit The Community House website.
