Weekend Planner: Classical Brunch, Casino Night

Also headlining this weekend is a lecture on African art at the Detroit Institute of Art and a performance from a world-class organist.

  • Why Go: Barrio, in partnership with Wish Upon A Teen — a non-profit helping teens who have experienced life-altering events — will be hosting the first annual "Dealing With the Stars" casino night Saturday. Rhonda Walker of Local 4 News will emcee an evening of food, dancing and casino games. Dealers will include local celebrities, such as Dennis Archer, Jr., Ben Sharkey and more. The evening will also include a silentauction. Cocktail attire is recommended and each person receives $500 worth of playing chips with their $100 ticket.

  • Why Go: Check out Auto Zone Hobbies this weekend for the chance to talk with someone who's helped chronicle Detroit's automotive history, in photographs. Davis is the author of four books is the Photographic Histories series, including Ford Dynasty, Detroit Area Test Tracks, Chrysler Heritage and General Motors. All four books can be purchased at Auto Zone Hobbies.

  • Where:
  • Why Go: Come see the world-famous Chroma Piano Trio, featuring Nurit Pacht on violin, Robert deMaine on cello and Priya Mayadas on piano. The group, currently the Trio-in-Residence at Chamber Music Grosse Pointe, has performed all over the world. Plus, stick around for a plated brunch, courtesy of The Community House.

  • When: 2 p.m. Sunday
  • Where:
  • Why Go: Margaret Prizer, a retired teacher and volunteer with the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), will take an in-depth look at the rich history of African art, particularly the collection at the DIA. Register in advance for this lecture at www.baldwinlib.org.

  • When: 3 p.m. Sunday
  • Where:
  • Why Go: Jeremy Tarrant, the organist and choirmaster of the Episcopal Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Detroit, will be making a special visit to Birmingham Sunday. Known for his performances across the country, Tarrant is the recipient of the first prize in the Ottumwa National Organ Competition and second prize in the Arthur Poister National Competition in 1998.
