Weekend Planner: Anti-Bullying Discussion to Follow Free Showing of 'Bully' This Weekend

  • Why Go: Birmingham parent Kathy Mast will be sponsoring a free showing of the critically acclaimed documentary Bully this weekend. Afterward, Kimber Bishop-Yanke, founder of Girls and Boys Empowered, will lead a discussion on bullying after the film, including pratical tips on how you bully-proof you child and strategies on how to stand up to meanness.   • When: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday
  • Where: First Presbyterian Church, at 529 Hendrie Blvd in Royal Oak
  • Why Go: Looking for some inexpensive clothes and gear for your kids? The First Presbyterian Church of Royal Oak is hosting a Mom2Mom sale Saturday. From 9-10 a.m., the cost to enter is $2. After that, admission is $1. Strollers are permitted after 10 a.m. If you want to have a table, contact Chris Birac at chirac@gmail.com.

  • When: 6 p.m. Thursday; 7 p.m. Friday-Saturday

  • Why Go: Do you have a middle school student? Then they'll want to check out Derby Middle School's performance of the musical 13, which features many issues middle school students face, from finding ways to fit in to learning about true friends. Tickets can be purchased the night of the performance or at the Derby office. Parental discretion is advised due to some mature teenage themes. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

  • Where:
  • Why Go: The St. James choir, soloists and the Michigan Sinfonietta orchestra present part one of Johann Sebastian Bach's Mass in B Minor, called "the greatest musical artwork of all times and all people." The concert was conducted by Glenn Burdette and there will be reception following the concert. The concert is free and open to the public.

  • When: 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday; 2 p.m. Sunday
  • Where:
  • Why Go: Groves High School reinvents the classic tale, Arabian Nights with several performances this weekend and a script specially written by a Groves teacher. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students.
