Weekend Planner: Birmingham Concert Band Plays Sunday

Also headlining this weekend is a Mom 2 Mom Sale at Oakland Schools and the Banff Mountain Film Festival at Cranbrook.

  • Why Go: The Birmingham Concert Band, under the direction of Grant Hoemke, presents 'The Hounds of Spring' this weekend. There will be music for every taste, including 'Selections from E.T.' to the classic 'Russian Sailor Dance.' Plus, if you fill out a survey at the event, you could win a free massage from . Admission is free.

  • When: 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday
  • Where: Oakland Schools (2111 Pontiac Lake Road)
  • Why Go: It's time to spring clean and make room for a new season. Come visit the mom 2 mom sale at Oakland Schools Saturday, with everything from toddler gear to toys and books on sale. Want to bring your own items? Tables are $20 and racks are $5. At the same time, there will be a children's health fair with dozens of non-profit organizations and vendors specializing in children's health and wellness. Entrance to the fair is $2.

  • Why Go: Don't you love finding hidden treasures at garage sales? Then you'll want to check out the Birmingham-wide community garage sale happening at Berkshie Middle School this Saturday. Up for sale with be clothes, toys, books, sports and exercise equipment, household items, furniture and more. All proceeds go toward the Birmingham Education Foundation, which funds key programs throughout the district.

  • Where: Cranbrook Art Museum (39221 Woodward Ave.)
  • Why Go: The Banff Centre, an arts center located in Canada's Banff National Park, is bringing their annual film and book festival to the Birmingham and Bloomfield area. In partnership with Moosejaw Mountaineering, the festival features some of the world's best footage on mountain subjects shot by everyone from beginner filmmakers to professional crews from National Geographic and the BBC. Tickets are on sale only at and Rochester fr $12.50 each; no tickets wil be available at the door.

  • Why Go: Fans of organ music will want to check out a concert from Joyce Jones at the First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham Sunday. Jones is a professor of music at Baylor University and organist in residence in Waco, TX. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.
