Weekend Planner: Art Festivals in Berkley and Royal Oak, Birmingham Law Day

Also highlighting this weekend is the Quarton Lake planting event and a concert at St. James Episcopal Church.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do this weekend. Birmingham Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time.

  • When: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday
  • Where: Downtown Berkley
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: The Berkley Art Bash returns this weekend, and for Birmingham residents, this one-day street festival is a few minutes drive down Woodward Avenue. Check out the artists, food vendors, live music and plenty of craft stations for the kids.

  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: Now in its 25th year, the Birmingham-based law firm 's "Law Day," a free legal aid clinic and family-fun day, will take place this weekend. From 11 a.m.-4 p.m., enjoy pro bono legal advice and counseling with Goodwin & Scieszka attorneys. Bring the kids too because not only will there be hotdogs and ice cream, kids can enjoy a bouncy castle and receive a free bicycle helmet (since the event began, the law firm has given away 10,000 bicycle helmets!). The law firm will also be giving away three bicycles during the course of the afternoon and Detroit Tigers tickets.

  • Why Go: The city will be hosting a special planting event along the Rouge River this weekend, at the Quarton Lake Park. Attendees should bring gardening materials. Anyone with questions should call 248-530-1700.

  • When: 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday
  • Where: Washington Avenue and Fifth Street, in Royal Oak
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: The 18th annual Clay, Glass and Metal Festival kicks off this weekend in downtown Royal Oak, featuring the works of more than 125 artists from around the country. Art will be for sale, and there will several demonstrations including a glass-blowing tent at Washington Avenue and Lincoln. Students from the Detroit School of Rock and Pop will also be performing at 4th Street and Washington while Motor City Franks and Treat Dreams will be on hand to provide the food.

  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: St. James presents a performance by soprano Jeanne Heller Bourget and her accompanist Amanda Sabelhaus this Sunday. Bourget will perform works by Fauré, Larsen, Poulenc, Louiguy, and Corigliano. A reception will immediately follow.
