Weekend Planner: Dog Show, Humane Society Fundraiser

    Where:
    Why Go: Check out Studio D this weekend, Dempster Designs' new spot for "showcasing Detroit's best in music, art, photography and creative thinking" at 1066 Commerce St. This weekend, Heidi Helper, Michele Ramo and Cafe Boheme will be performing.

    Saturday-Sunday
    Where:
    Why Go: Seeger People is hosting their twice-a-year fundraiser for the Humane Society of Michigan this weekend. For a minimum donation of $20 to the Michigan Humane Society, you get a 15 minute photo session for your pet and a 5x7 print. Call to book your appointment at 248-646-9010.

    6:30 p.m. Saturday
    Where:
    Why Go: This year's theme for the 11th annual Unabased Bash, the largest fundraiser for the Birmingham Education Foundation, is “Bright Lights. Bright Future” and will highlight the real stars at — staff and students. This is BEF's 11th annual fundraiser. In addition to dinner and an open bar, the evening features live and silent auctions, musical selections from student performers, and a focus on student accomplishments.

    1 p.m. Sunday
    Where:
    Why Go: Do you live in the Birmingham Public School district and want to show off your pooch? Birmingham Youth Assistance will sponsor its 31st annual dog show this weekend at Berkshire Middle School. Prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories including best costume, largest and smallest dog, best behaved as well as the dog with the most personality.

    6:30-9 p.m. Friday
    Where:
    Why Go: Need some motivation to keep those healthy New Years resolutions? A Place to Be, a health and nutrition resource organization based in Birmingham, will be hosting a Be Healthy Michigan fair at The Community House Friday evening. The evening will offer participants to chance to mingle with local nutritionists and health experts, as well as talk to dozens of area vendors. The keynote speaker will be Florida chiropractor Dr. Annette Schippel, followed by a presentation from a panel of local health experts.
