From Teens to Concert Band Lovers, There's Music for Everyone this Weekend

The Winter Battle of the Bands happens Friday night, Blackthorn performs at Groves Saturday and the Birmingham Concert Band has their pops concert Sunday.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do this weekend. Birmingham Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your upcoming weekend from Birmingham and the surrounding area:

Music: Blackthorn

  • When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday
  • Where: Groves High School
  • Cost: $20
  • Why Go: Mark your calendars to see the highly acclaimed and ever-popular Blackthorn, the Great Lakes-based Celtic band, with Groves High School's own Richard McMullan, head of Groves' world language department. Blackthorn will delight and entertain you with an evening of Irish, bluegrass, American folk and other music.

Music: Battle of the Bands

  • When: 7-10:30 p.m. Friday
  • Where: Village Players
  • Cost: $2
  • Why Go: Rock out the start of 2013 at the Youth Action Board's Winter Battle of the Bands, held this Friday at the Village Players Theater in Birmingham. Hear some of the best local bands, then vote for your favorite for just $1 each. All proceeds support Youth Action Board programs, a sponsored group of the Birmingham Bloomfield Community Coalition.

Music: Birmingham Concert Band

  • When: 3 p.m. Sunday
  • Where: Lutheran Church of the Redeemer
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: The Birmingham Concert Band presents "Ensemble Pops" this weekend, a free concert featuring various ensembles made up of concert band members. Hear all your favorite classical tunes at this free concert at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer on West Maple.

Film: Roeper Diversity Film Series

  • When: 7:30-10 p.m. Saturday
  • Where: Roeper Upper School
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: Stop by the Roeper School for a free screening of Sing Your Song, a documentary about the singer and actor, Harry Belafonte, and his struggle with the civil rights movement in Hollywood. The film is part of the Roeper Diversity Film Series.

Fundraiser: Mom 2 Mom Sale

  • When: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday
  • Where: Groves High School
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: Pick up something new for your kids this weekend at the Groves High School Mom 2 Mom sale, hosted by the Groves Fashion Club.
