Weekend Planner: Lido Gallery Exhibit, Fine Arts Competition

Also headlining this weekend is a gardening workshop at Cranbrook and an egg hunt at the Bowers School Farm.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do this weekend. Birmingham Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time.

  • Why Go: This Saturday marks the kick off for the 2012 Michigan Fine Arts Competition at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center. More than 236 works of art from 177 artists from 80 cities throughout Michigan were accepted into the show, which will run at the Art Center March 30-May 4. Saturday, artists and art-lovers can mingle during an artists reception, followed by the awards presentation.

  • Where: Bloomfield Township Library (1099 Lone Pine Rd.)
  • Cost: Free
  • Why Go: Students from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater and Dance will perform at the Bloomfield Township Library as part of its Chamber Music Concert Series. The concert is sponsored by the Friends of the Bloomfield Township Library. No registration is required.

  • When: 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday
  • Where: Cranbrook (39221 Woodward Ave.)
  • Cost: $30 per person ($20 for members)
  • Why Go: Spring is here and so the Cranbrook House and Gardens Auxiliary invites community members to attend "From Arugula to Zinnias and Everything In-Between: A Crabrook Greenhouse Family Workshop." Participants will take an in-depth look at common garden plants and learn all about them, plus tour the facilities and participate in a planting activity. The workshop is recommended for families with children over the age of six. Please register in advance at www.­cranbrook.­edu; space is limited.

  • Where: (1219 E. Square Lake Rd.)
  • Cost: $4 for the egg hunt; nominal charges for other activities
  • Why Go: Get into the spirit of spring at the Bowers School Farm this weekend with an open barn tour and egg hunt. On display will be plenty of newborn lambs and goats. Kids can feed the babies, ride a pony and take a tour of the farm by wagon. Plus, there will be three egg hunts during the day: at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

  • Why Go: Artist Joyce Lieberman will be exhibiting her paintings of large-scale flowers this weekend and through April 14 at the Lido Gallery. Lieberman currently lives in Venice, CA though she is originally from Michigan. Gallery hours Friday is 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday.
