Save the Date: Celebrate Birmingham Parade Set for May

This year's parade will feature the Whiskers and Waggles Pet Parade and kids activities at Shain Park.

Spring is here which means one thing: parade season is approaching.

In early February, the Birmingham City Commission officially set the date for the 2013 Celebrate Birmingham Parade: May 19 at 1 p.m.

On that date, everyone from local marching bands and politicians to clowns and fire trucks will march through downtown Birmingham in the city's annual celebration of spring.

This year's theme: "Red, White & Blue."

“Participating in the parade is such a fun experience, and it offers vast exposure for teams and organizations,” said Celebrate Birmingham Chairperson Sandy Debicki in a recent release. “It’s a great way to get involved with the community and become a part of a long-standing community tradition.”

Last year's parade was the first year for the Whiskers and Waggles Pet Parade, which replaces the traditional basset hound waddle. Also returning this year, the Junior League of Birmingham will host a variety of kids activities in Shain Park following the festivities.

If you want to participate in the parade, complete a Participate Form by April 26. Confirmation letters will be sent out during the second week of May. Also due by April 26 are Sponsorship Forms.

Yesterday on my street, I saw a tree, on city property, with 'stuff' piled high around the base ofRead More the tree. I tried to tell the two gentlemen there it would eventually kill the tree. 'Not so!' they replied, according to, I believe, their landscaper. They then proceeded to try and placate this nosy gray haired woman. Maybe someone from the city could clue them in??
