Patch Picks: Finding the Perfect Summer Camp

We even have a mid-spring recess camp for those looking to get away before school lets out.

So, there's still snow on the ground -- that doesn't mean you can't start making plans to send the kids to summer camp. We're looking at the various summer camps in the Birmingham-area.

Camp Super Summer
Camp Super Summer offers kids a week-long activity-based learning experience at the . Full-day campers attend five different classes daily and half-day campers attend three per day, with class choices ranging from jewelry-making to basketball to "science explosion." Seven weeks available, beginning June 27 through Aug. 12. For weeks 1 and 3-7, the cost is $200 for full-day camps and $110 for half-day. For week 2, the cost is $160 for full day camp and $90 for half day.

Camp Birmingham
For kids ages 6-11, Camp Birmingham is a seven-week long day camp at the , with a weekly field trip, swimming, arts and crafts, sports and more. The camps focuses on a different theme each week: learning how to work with money, celebrating the world of Star Wars, and "green week" where kids explore ways to help the environment. The price is $175 per week for YMCA members and $205 per week for non-members.

Young Rembrandts Pre-School Drawing Camp
During this six-week long camp, held every Friday July 15 through Aug. 19, preschoolers are instructed in drawing and coloring while also developing fine motor skills, listening, spatial organization and focus. Classes are held at and taught by certified instructors from Young Rembrandts, a nation-wide art instruction program that focuses on teaching young children.

Caberet Camp
This four-day theatre camp at focuses on teaching intermediate and advanced vocalists in grades 7-12 the basics of cabaret singing and dancing. Workshops include an emphasis on technique, style, projection, interpretation and musicality. Solo as well as group work will be emphasized during the camp, which lasts from Aug. 8-11 and is capped off by a final performance.

High Touch High Tech Enrichment Camp
Can't wait until summer to go to camp? Enjoy Birmingham Community Education office's spring recess camp at that makes science fun. From April 4-8, students in grades 4-8 can learn everything about natural phenomenon, to "chemystery,"  an aptly named Pop Fizz Foam Day where students will have the chance to build a bubble city and more. All five days cost $225, although students can attend an individual day for $57 each.
