Need To Know: Going Out of Town for Labor Day

If you are traveling for Labor Day weekend, here's the scoop on construction and weather.

For some, it's the last long weekend of the summer. If you're going out of town for Labor Day weekend, here's what you need to know before you leave town.

Construction

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be removing certain lane restrictions from more than half of its road projects to help motorists have an easier travel experience this Labor Day weekend.

From 3 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Tuesday, 82 of the state's 147 construction projects statewide will have lane restrictions removed. According to AAA, an estimated 1.2 million motorists will be driving on Michigan roads and bridges this weekend.

However, state transportation director Kirk T. Steudle said several projects will continue to have lane restrictions and that drivers should continue to use caution when driving in a construction zone.

"We want everyone to make it back home safely this holiday weekend," he said.

Several of those lane closures are in Oakland County, including:

  • Crooks Road will be down to one lane in each direction over M-59.
  • I-96 has three lanes open in each direction between Milford Road and Kent Lake Road. In addition, the northbound and southbound Kent Lake Road ramps to westbound I-96 are closed.
  • M-5 has right lanes closed in each direction between Purdue Street and 8 Mile.
  • M-59 has two lanes open in each direction between Crooks Road and Opdyke Road. Also, the eastbound M-59 ramp to northbound I-75 is closed.

Weather

Looking for good driving weather? The weather is expected to be clear and sunny this weekend, with a slight chance of rain all four days.

However, you may want to delay any grilling until Monday. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has declared Friday an Ozone Action Day due to elevated levels of ozone and pollutants. People and businesses are urged to avoid activities that lead to ozone formation, such as refueling vehicles, mowing the lawn or using charcoal lighter fluid.

Friday: The weather will be mostly sunny with a high near 93 degrees. In the evening, there's a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms with lows around 72 degrees.

Saturday: There's a 50 percent chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms Saturday, though the rest of the forecast calls for partly sunny skies and a high near 86 degrees. Saturday night, lows dip to 67 degrees.

Sunday: Sunday will be even cooler, with a high near 77 degrees and a low at 57 degrees in the evening. There is also a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Monday: Labor Day will be cool, with a high of 67 degrees. The skies will be partly sunny with a slight chance of showers. The evening will be partly cloudy, with a low around 50 degrees.
