Need To Know: Birmingham Prepares to Honor Sept. 11

The city has a lineup of activities planned to honor and remember those who died on Sept. 11, 2001.

The 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States is this Sunday and across the country, millions will be honoring the thousands of people who died on that sunny morning. In Birmingham, a piece of the Twin Towers will be installed for temporary display at the Adams Street Fire Station while the city has a line-up of events planned for the anniversary.

Here's what you need to know about what's going in Birmingham, Oakland County and the surrounding area during these somber weeks of reflection and remembrance.

Sept. 10: National Day of Service and Remembrance

  • When: 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday
  • Where:

On Saturday, the 's Youth Service department will help celebrate the . From 10:30 a.m.-noon, Baldwin librarians will share patriotic stories and songs with participating children and their parents. Kids can also help make a remembrance flag for display in the library's youth room.

"We feel it is important for the library to acknowledge the National Day of Service and Remembrance this year and also provide a positive and upbeat experience for the kids," said Connie Ilmer, head of public services. "Reinforcing the idea of doing something for others and sharing seemed a good fit, especially as community service is increasingly stressed at the schools."

Sept. 11: Remembrance and dedication ceremony

The city of Birmingham will from New York City at 11 a.m. Sunday — an event in memory of those who lost their lives that day and honoring the sacrifices of the individual and families who survived.

The city obtained the steel remnant from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey earlier this year through a program designed to allow communities across the country to establish Sept. 11 memorials. Funding for the transportation and display costs for the Birmingham display has been provided for by the Marjory & Donald Epstein Family Charitable Foundation.

The Adams Street fire station will remain open until noon for the public to view the new memorial.

Sept. 13: Film premiere to honor veterans

  • When: 4 p.m. Sept. 13
  • Where:

American House Senior Living Community is sponsoring a red carpet Patriot Week event at the Birmingham 8 on Sept. 8 to honor more than 300 veterans and their families from Troy, Rochester, Birmingham and Bloomfield Township.

The evening will begin at 4 p.m. with the premiere of the film From the Beaches of Normandy to the Jungles of Vietnam, a 95-minute compilation of the award-winning documentaries Detroit, Our Greatest Generation and Our Vietnam Generation.

American House will also show a video montage of all the veterans planning to attend, while John Kulhavi, retired Brigidier General and Huey Fighter pilot, will deliver a keynote speech. Sen. John Pappageorge is also expected to attend.

Afterward, American House will present the film One Soldier's Story, which features the life of Michigan soldier Sgt. Michael Ingram Jr., who died while serving in Afghanistan.

Sept. 11-17: Oakland County's Patriot Week

Created in 2009 by Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Michael Warren and his daughter Leah, seeks to renew America's spirit by celebrating the First Principles, Founding Fathers and other patriots, vital documents and speeches and flags. Each day of Patriot Week promotes a First Principle on which our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution are based.

According to Warren, this year's Patriot Week is more important than ever.

“In light of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, it’s especially important to celebrate the values that made us the greatest nation in the history of the world,” said Warren in a press release.
