Get Out: Freedom Riders, Birmingham Law Day and More

From a passport fair to a barbecue honoring retiring Berkshire Principal Jim Moll, there's something for everyone this weekend.

  1. Where:
    When: 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday
    Why: The Berkshire Proud Dads' Club and Middle School PTSA invites everyone to a barbecue honoring Jim Moll, retiring principal of Berkshire Middle School.

  2. Where: 999 Haynes St. (behind )
    When: 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday
    Why: The Birmingham-based law firm Goodwin & Scieszka is sponsoring a free legal aid clinic Saturday. Attorneys will donate their time to give free legal advice on all areas of the law. In addition to pro bono counseling, visitors get free hot dogs, prizes and free bike helmets for all children.

  3. Where:
    When: 1-3 p.m. Saturday
    Why: Madison Bleu will hold a premiere showing of Hawthorne, the TNT cable network series featuring Jada Pinkett Smith. The event will be hosted by radio personality Kirby Hairston of WGPR-FM, 107.5, and will feature fun, food, giveaways and lively discussions of the show. In addition, nurses and nursing students will receive 20 percent off any service.

  4. Where:
    When: 7 p.m. Sunday
    Why: Dick Gleason, one of the 13 freedom riders, will talk about his experiences as the nation marks the 50th anniversary of the Mississippi Freedom Rides and the civil rights movement they sparked.

  5. Where:
    When: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday
    Why: The city clerk's office is making getting a passport a little bit easier Saturday by bringing the office to the Baldwin Public Library. You can apply for a new passport or renewal and obtain all passport information.
