Fashion's Night Out Hits Downtown Birmingham Thursday

Fifteen downtown merchants have signed up to participate in this worldwide celebration of fashion and beauty.

The world of fashion will be celebrated in downtown Birmingham this Thursday during the fourth annual .

Fifteen downtown Birmingham merchants will be participating in this year's event, a night in which the fashion industry the world over showcases the latest in fashion and beauty.

Created four years ago by Vogue Editor Anna Wintour in New York City, Fashion's Night Out also seeks to bring attention to the role fashion retailing plays in the economy.

And with a downtown known for its fashionable shops and restaurants, Director (PSD) John Heiney said having Birmingham participate was an obvious choice.

"Businesses love this event because it is all about fashion, shopping and fun," Heiney said. "It's a great night to stroll downtown and check out our boutiques, salons and restaurants."

This is the third year Birmingham has participated in Fashion's Night Out, and many of the same retailers — from Tender to Caruso Caruso — are back on board, showcasing fall collections, offering beauty makeovers and serving complimentary appetizers and drinks.

"Over the past few years, we have observed a nice increase in foot traffic, with many shoppers coming out dressed and showing their individual flair for fashion," Heiney said.

Heiney said Birmingham is one of only a few downtowns in Michigan hosting a coordinated Fashion's Night Out event. Nearby events include several stores at Troy's Somerset Collection as well as several Metro Detroit Coldwater Creek and Torrid stores.

In addition, this year's event will feature models stationed throughout downtown Birmingham, showcasing apparel and accessories from participating downtown merchants.

New this year, Heiney said, is Birmingham's Best Bag contest. Shoppers need only guess the value of the bag and win its contents: valuable gift certificates and products from participating businesses.

Fashion's Night Out is scheduled for 6-9 p.m. Thursday. A finalized map of participating merchants and list of in-store events should be posted at the PSD's website, www.EnjoyBirmingham.com, by Wednesday, Heiney said.
