Don't Forget to Register for the Birmingham Bike Festival

Online pre-registration is open until Thursday for racers looking to compete in 14 categories.

Now that the Dream Cruisers have left, it's time for Birmingham to celebrate another form of transportation with this Sunday's .

Stay tuned to Birmingham Patch this week as we take a look at what's in store for the event, now in its second year in downtown Birmingham. But first things first: if you want to participate, you need to register.

Online pre-registration will be available at www.birminghambikefestival.org and www.usacycling.org until Thursday. Those who register day-of will have to pay an additional $10 in all categories.

To register, here's what you need to know:

  • Registration the day of will open at 7 a.m. and close 30 minutes prior to the start of each race. Day-of registration takes place in front of , on Maple Road.
  • Registration fees range from $10 (for junior races) to $45 for professional races.
  • All riders except those riding in the kids, Miles4Miles, municipal workers and challenge races must show a valid driver's license.
  • If you're a licensed rider, make sure you've purchased your annual license. A one-day license option is only available for the Category 5 Men and Category 4 Women races.
  • Each rider must sign a rider release form (available at the registration table during the event).
  • Helmets are required for all riders.
  • All USA Cycling rules apply.

Race Description Junior, ages 10-14 For riders looking to start their racing career.
Junior, ages 15-18: For riders at the junior-professional level. Category (Cat) 4 Women For women with limited to no racing experience. There will be a cash purse for this race. Cat 1/2/3 Women Races for the experienced women racer. There will be a cash purse. Cat 5 Men For men who have little or no previous racing experience. There will be no cash prizes in this category. Cat 4 Men For men with some racing experience, though not for those considered full-time professional races. There will be a cash purse. Cat 3 Men For men racers with quite a bit of racing experience, but not at a professional level. Masters 40+ For professionals and former professionals. No races allowed younger than 40. There will be a cash purse. Pro 1/2 Men A race for mostly full-time serious and professional racers. Racers must have a category 1-2 or professional license. There will be a cash purse. Hand Cycle A race for special trikes propelled solely by the arms. There will be a cash purse. Challenge Race A relay race consisting of teams of four where each participatnt does one lap around the course. Municipal workers race A team race for workers from specific city departments and governements. Kids Race A fun, casual "mini race" for young children of all ages (usually up to 14 years). Every racer gets a prize. Miles4Miles A 20-minute parade-style event for children and young adults of all abilities. There is no entrance fee.
