City Cancels Celebrate Birmingham Parade Due to Weather

With wind gusts up 26 mph and rain expected all day, city clerk Laura Broski said the police department and parade committee wanted to keep everyone safe and dry.

The has been canceled due to weather conditions, a message released by the city said Sunday morning, and there are no plans to reschedule.

According to the National Weather Service, there will be rain showers throughout the day, with wind gusting as high as 26 miles per hour. The high temperature will be around 50 degrees.

The decision to cancel the parade, which was supposed to begin at 1 p.m., was made in part by the parade committee and police department early Sunday morning, city clerk Laura Broski said. With the rain, wind and cold, she said both groups didn’t see the parade as feasible.

“Plus, this rain isn’t going to let up either,” Broski said.

This is the first time in 20 years the city has canceled the parade, this year themed ‘The Good Ole Days.’  The parade route had changed this year, with the event supposed to begin on South Old Woodward Avenue and end in , where the were going to host activities and games for the kids.

As of 10 a.m., Broski said they had just finished calling all parade participants alerting them to the cancellation.

The city has no plans to reschedule the parade, Broski said, “though we’re definitely on for next year.”

The , located in the municpal parking lot on North Old Woodward Avenue, is still on for the day, with several vendors intent on riding out the storm, farmers market organizers said Sunday morning.

I am not sure if the city is ware, but there is insurance for this type of cancellation. Event Cancellation coverage would pay back to the city the funds they lost by canceling the parade. Perhaps something to keep in mind for future events.

Yesterday on my street, I saw a tree, on city property, with 'stuff' piled high around the base ofRead More the tree. I tried to tell the two gentlemen there it would eventually kill the tree. 'Not so!' they replied, according to, I believe, their landscaper. They then proceeded to try and placate this nosy gray haired woman. Maybe someone from the city could clue them in??
