5 Things to Know This Week: Educational Conference, Winter Count Day

Here's what you need to know about Birmingham this week.

  1. School board meeting Tuesday: The Birmingham Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the on West Merrill Street. On the agenda is approval of summer school and tuition rates for the 2012-13 school year. The regular meeting will be followed by a study session beginning at 8 p.m.
  2. : The Birmingham Public Schools district will hold the Baby and the Bathwater Conference beginning at 7:30 a.m. Monday at . The conference will include Allan Luke, creator of the Four Resources Model of Literacy, as the keynote speaker as well as various breakout sessions focusing on the question, "What from the past should we continue to teach, and what should we throw out to make room for new knowledge skills?" School administrators, teachers, parents and the public are invited to attend.
  3. Planning Board to meet Wednesday: The Birmingham Planning Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at . On the agenda is a study session, during which Planning Board members will discuss but not make any decisions regarding: the city's plans for alleys and passageways, the Woodward Avenue Action Association Transit Oriented Development Task Force, implementation of the city's Triangle Plan, and update to the Planning Board's action list.

Make sure your children get to school Wednesday, the date of Michigan's Winter Count Day. Student attendence will be tallied, and once blended with numbers from the Fall Count Day (occurring the first Wednesday in October), the state will determine how much the district receives in state funding.
