5 Things to Know This Week: Detroit Tigers, Elmore Leonard Coming to Birmingham

Here's what you need to know about Birmingham this week.

Banks, schools closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day: While schools, banks and state and federal offices — including the U.S. Postal Service — are closed Monday for the holiday, city offices remain open, as are the Baldwin Public Library, The Community House and more.   2. : With the theme "Why is it taking so long?," the Race Relations and Diversity Taskforce, in collaboration with the North Oakland branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, will host the 20th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at 8 a.m. Monday at . The keynote speaker will be Rochelle Riley, columnist for the Detroit Free Press, while the Brazeal Dennard Chorale will provide the music.
