5 Things to Know This Week: Fat Tuesday Carnival, Conversation with Charles Pugh

  1. Fat Tuesday Carnival on Tuesday: Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras, is Tuesday, and the Detroit Wine Organization is celebrating at South Bar with the Fat Tuesday Carnival. Savor the flavors of South American wines from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, with live music by Jumping Jack and psychic readings available by Detroit psychic Ronn Masks. Beads will be provided. Tickets cost $35 at detroitwine.org.
  2. Empty Bowls Soup Supper on Wednesday: The First United Methodist Church of Birmingham will host an Empty Bowls Soup Supper from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, with proceeds going directly to local food banks, soup kitchens and Detroit's Art & Soul Ministry. Soup and bread will be provided by more than two dozen area restaurants. Tickets cost $10 per person or $25 per family.
  3. A conversation with Charles Pugh: Charles Pugh, Detroit City Council president, will be at The Community House from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, discussing what's going on in Detroit and soliciting feedback from Oakland County residents. Craig Fahle of WDET-FM, 101.9, will host the event. Space is limited, so partcipants are urged to register at wdet.org.
  4. Cigar and tequila tasting Wednesday: Got Rocks Diamond Crown Cigar Lounge, located on the second floor of the Big Rock Chop House, will host a special cigar and tequila tasting from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday. Enjoy complimentary hors d'oeuvres with a flight of three different samples of Blue Nectar Tequila served with a new blended cigar from J.C. Newman. The event costs $10 per person, and attendees should call 248-647-7774 to register.
  5. Our Shepherd School open house Thursday: The Our Shepherd Lutheran School will host an open house from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday at 1658 E. Lincoln St. The next open house will be April 17.
