The Townsend Turns 25

The Townsend Hotel in Birmingham is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, I sat down for a personal interview with managing director Steven Kalczynski.

  • The Townsend is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.  It first opened its doors to an admiring public in June of 1988, and its expansion grand opening took place in March of 2000.

  • In honor of its silver anniversary, the hotel is sponsoring a contest.  Everyone who submits a memory photo of The Townsend will be entered in a drawing to win a luxurious bed & breakfast package for two.  See The Townsend website for complete contest details.

  • The polished and impressive decor evokes the ambiance of English aristocracy in The Townsend’s 150 rooms and suites, designed by Joy Walker of Joy Walker Design LLC.  The hotel architecture is in the English manor house style.

  • The hotel has received numerous awards.  Condé Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazine  voted it one of the World’s Best Hotels in 2012.  It has earned a Perennial AAA Four-Diamond rating.

  • There are six specialty suites: The Shain Park Suite, The Birmingham Suite, The Townsend Suite, The Presidential Suite, The Executive Suite, and The Luxury Suite.  Guests in those suites will enjoy such amenities as fresh-cut flowers, four-poster beds, fireplaces, marble bathrooms, and spectacular views of the downtown area.

  • The bed sheets at The Townsend Hotel are 100% Egyptian cotton sheets, 316 thread count with custom Italian duvet covers.  Terry bathrobes and slippers are provided, plus a selection of Bvlgari and Gilchrist & Soames bath products.  The hotel also has its very own bakery.

  • There’s a 24-hour concierge service, a 24-hour fitness center, 24-hour in-room dining, and a 24-hour business center.  High-speed Internet access is provided, along with a 32” flat screen LCD television.  Guest receives a complimentary newspaper, complimentary shoe shine, complimentary coffee service, and friendly wake-up calls.

  • Another attraction is the Rugby Grille, a delightful restaurant featuring an American-Continental cuisine and an impressive wine list.  It has been rated one of the Top Ten Restaurants in the United States by Zagat’s Restaurant Guide.  If you’re looking for hot Detroit-area nightlife, visit The Corner with its chic decor, an extensive menu of specialty drinks, and live music on Friday and Saturday nights – and it was recently renovated and upgraded.

  • The internationally-recognized Townsend Hotel redefines luxury in Metro Detroit.  The hotel’s ballroom can accommodate groups of up to 500 people, perfect for weddings or business meetings.  Many celebrities and dignitaries choose The Townsend as their destination of choice in Michigan, whenever they’re looking for elegance and service.
INTERVIEW WITH STEVEN KALCZYNSKI I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Steven Kalczynski, managing director of The Townsend Hotel, on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. Mr. Kalczynski is a relative newcomer to The Townsend – he was hired in September, 2012 – but he brings more than 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry.  His career has taken him from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Los Angeles, California, but also to China, India, and Qatar. I wanted to find out what makes a hotel great, what his day is like, and what’s ahead for The Townsend in the next 25 years. EM:  What do you like best about your job? SK:  There’s a very old saying by Rudyard Kipling that “if you can walk with crowds and keep your virtue, or walk with kings nor lose the common touch."  It is important to be comfortable with kings and paupers — and welcomed by both.  The people that come in and stay at The Townsend Hotel are the “crème de la crème” of Detroit and Michigan society.  I can be greeting a luxury guest at the front door of the hotel and the next minute I could be having lunch with any of my associates in the cafeteria.  I also truly enjoy leading a wonderful team of associates at The Townsend! EM:  I read in your bio that you worked in Los Angeles and also in North Carolina.  Is that correct? SK:  I’ve had a really extensive career of 30 years – 20 of which have been overseas.  I spent ten years in China and have also done stints in Mumbai, India and Qatar in the Middle East. Early in my career I worked in Grenada in the Caribbean and also in Toronto, Canada.  When I was in the U.S., I primarily worked for Starwood Hotels & Resorts in Boston, New Orleans and Washington DC.  I also had regional responsibilities and supported about 40 hotels in the Midwest region, franchise properties.  I was general manager of the St. Regis in Los Angeles for a period of time before it closed its doors, and five years at The Ballantyne, which is a Starwood Luxury Collection property in Charlotte, North Carolina. EM:  And you’ve been at The Townsend since September of 2012? SK:  Correct.  I came here in September, and I arrived from the Middle East.  I was in Doha, Qatar, with Starwood Hotels working there.
