This week, Starbucks started offering their caffeinated customers a more eco-friendly way to enjoy their coffee
According to the Detroit Free Press, the coffee giant will begin selling reusable cups on Jan. 3 in an attempt to reduce the waste created by customers purchasing millions of beverages — and then throwing their cups away — every day. The cups will retail for $1 and fill up to a grande size for a cup of joe.
Each refill in a reusable cup — be it one of the new tumblers or another Starbucks mug — earns the user a dime off their purchase.
The cups have already debuted on the west coast, but will hit all Starbucks location in the U.S. and Canada — including the Birmingham location on South Old Woodward — on Thursday.
"We see real excitement about these cups," Starbucks' Jim Hanna told the Free Press. "People think they’re cool."
Both Starbucks and the Michigan coffee chain, already offer a discount to customers who come in for a coffee refill with their reusable travel mug. However, those type of drink containers can cost $10 or more. Hanna said he believes the low price of Starbucks' new cup will drive use.
