Trendy West Elm Furniture Set to Make Metro Detroit Debut in Downtown Birmingham

Recruiting the store is a coup for the Birmingham Principal Shopping District, which hopes to create a unique outdoor experience that competes with some of the suburb's neighbors.

Birmingham will get a new furniture and housewares store – trendy West Elm – scheduled to open in later this year on West Maple between Bates and Henrietta.

An exact opening date has not been set, according to the Birmingham Principal Shopping District, which confirmed to the Detroit News that modern furniture and housewares store would be making its first metro Detroit appearance in Birmingham.

West Elm is owned by Williams-Sonoma Inc., which also owns Pottery Barn. There are 51 West Elms stores nationwide, and the store now closest to metro Detroit is in Columbus Ohio.

“Our retail recruitment program ... has been extremely successful in attracting national, specialty retailers, like West Elm, to our downtown shopping district,” John Heiney, the group’s executive director, said.

The Birmingham Principal Shopping District has embarked on a five-year effort to bring more upscale shopping districts to the downtown area. Emphasis is on creating an outdoor experience that includes outdoor concerts and public green spaces, which officials think will allow Birmingham to compete with Troy’s Somerset Collection a couple of miles away.
