Travel Channel Star Says Townsend Hotel Is One of His Favorites

Anthony Melchiorri, star of the Travel Channel's 'Hotel Impossible,' listed the Birmingham hotel as one of his favorites in the world.

One Travel Channel star says Birmingham is home to one his favorite places to lay his head while he's out on the road.

Anthony Melchiorri, star of the Travel Channel's Hotel Impossible, named Birmingham's Townsend Hotel as one of his favorite hotels in the world in a recent Travel and Leisure article.

In an article published Feb. 4, Melchiorri says the Townsend has just the right blend of modern amentities and tradition.

"Then, there's one (hotel) outside of Detroit called the Townsend Hotel," he told Travel and Leisure's associate editor, Brooke Porter. "It's the best hotel I've seen that has the techology of today, but makes me feel like it was 100 years ago."

Also on Melchiorri's list of favorites: The Excelsior in Dubrovnik, Croatia; Shutters on the Beach in Los Angeles; and the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.

As part of Hotel Impossible, Melchiorri — the former director of front office operations at New York's Plaza Hotel — visits struggling hotels across the country, advising owners and managers how to fix thngs before it's too late.

The Townsend Hotel was recently named the third best hotel in Detroit and Michigan by U.S. News & World Report, while in November, the Birmingham hotel was named among the Top 25 Hotels in the Midwest by Conde Nast Traveler.
