New Restaurant Lined Up for Zazios Spot in Greenleaf Trust Building

A restaurant called The Stand is looking to fill the corner spot at Woodward and Maple, a development company announced at Wednesday's Planning Board meeting.

Zazios may not yet be closed, but the developers behind Birmingham’s Greenleaf Trust Building already have a new restaurant lined up for the corner of Maple and Woodward.

At the Wednesday night meeting of the Birmingham Planning Board, Patti Owens of the Catalyst Development, Co. announced that a new restaurant called The Stand would be moving into the Greenleaf Trust Building’s soon-to-be empty first floor.

Zazios, a colorful fixture on Woodward since July 2010, announced earlier this month that they would be closing on Jan. 31.

The project will be headed up by Catalyst, the development arm of the Kalamazoo-based Greenleaf Trust. Also on board is the Birmingham architecture firm Victor Saroki & Associates and John Kelly Construction.

“We’re working as quickly as possible with a really dedicated and wonderful team,” said Owens, president of Catalyst.

“We’re committed to this building,” she added. “This is going to be a wonderful concept that I think everyone will really love.”

The developers are now putting the finishing touches on their Special Land Use application, which they plan on putting before the Planning Board by the end of February.

Planning Director Jana Ecker said the group must receive an amendment to their original Special Land Use Permit since The Stand will have a new name and new operators.

Zazios is the owner of Birmingham’s only economic development license, a special form of liquor licenses set aside for projects that heavily invest along the Woodward corridor.

Though more details have yet to be released, Planning Board members said they were happy the Greenleaf Trust Building wasn’t going to be empty for long.

“I’m pleased we’re not going to have a dark building,” Planning Board chairman Robin Boyle said.

What kind food should they serve or specialize in at The Stand? What kind restaurant does Birmingham need?

Anything but a new steakhouse/bistro. Sushi or Mexican would be great.

We need a good old Mexican resturant . One similar to Monrerays in RO. Good margaritas, fun bar area, KID friendly, no fancy upscale Mexican .... The simple dishes. People would flock to it. Everyone I ask says the same thing. Good old Mexican!

I'm thinking a good Chinese restaurant that serves Dim Sum would be great. We have nothing like that in town. Love the small plates concept.

Birmingham needs a good SPORTS bar.

No steak! Birmingham is lacking a truly family friendly restaurant. As a fan of Mexican, I agree that one good choice would be casual Mexican food.

No Chains! A locals place with food and a concept on par with other major urban cities for our own little town of Bham. An approachable concept so I can go a couple times a week and not be broke!

I agree with previous comments... Something affordable so we don't have to go to Royal Oak! And NOT a steak place!

Zumbas was a quick in and out Mexican place . It was more of a lunch spot. It wasn't like that "good old Mexican " aka Monterays in RO. The new "taco" place on Hamilton is too upscale Mexican and not kid:family friendly. What booths do not shout kid friendly. I agree .... No more steak places.

I'd like to see a modern day gastro bistro. Good good, good service.

Innovation in bar chef styled cocktails, matched with food but not so esoteric and pretentious I can't make it at home (see "things mixologist say" on youtube for how NOT to be). I have had a great barrel aged cocktail in a recent trip out of town and would love to see it work in Bham!

Yesterday on my street, I saw a tree, on city property, with 'stuff' piled high around the base ofRead More the tree. I tried to tell the two gentlemen there it would eventually kill the tree. 'Not so!' they replied, according to, I believe, their landscaper. They then proceeded to try and placate this nosy gray haired woman. Maybe someone from the city could clue them in??
