Royal Oak: Hippies Pizza
Owner Christopher Culbartson, a second generation hippie who went to Woodstock in 1999, has put together a menu that includes 40 toppings, eight cheeses and nine sauces, as well as vegan-friendly and gluten-free options.
“We even make a peanut butter-and-jelly pizza for kids and fried Twinkies for dessert,” Culbartson said.
But, what really sets Hippies apart from all of the other pizza shops in town is its late-night deliveries, which include anything you need from the nearby 7-Eleven.
“Late nights are crazy in this town. Nothing is open. People have a lot of needs, from condoms to baby food. We double our orders in the last three hours we are open because people need us,” Culbartson said. Call 248-733-1111 or visit www.hippiespizza.com for more information.
Birmingham: Zazios
The colorful and modern restaurant at the corner of Woodward Avenue and Maple Road will close its doors Jan. 31. Taking its place will be a "new and exciting concept" that will be revealed soon, Greenleaf Hospitality Group public relations and marketing manager Sarah Lee said.
Zazios, which has been open since July 2010, boasts a 24-seat table that surrounds a kitchen stage where a chef prepared a meal each night. Call 248-530-6400 or visit zazios.com for more information.
