Business Briefs: Schakolad Opens New Location, Plans to Partner With Nonprofits

Royal Oak therapist moves to Birmingham while businesses schedule ribbon cuttings and other events.

Schakolad announces partnership with area nonprofits as part of grand reopening

With a new year, comes a new location and new initiatives for , which at 1728 W. Maple Rd.

The chocolate shop will be partnering with a different nonprofit organization every month in 2012, as well as creating a signature chocolate to match that organization. Every month, then, proceeds from the sale of the chocolate will go back toward the nonprofit.

The initiative begins in February with . Also new at Schakolad's new location, the shop will now serve Chazzano coffee and Great Lakes Tea & Spice teas.

Royal Oak psychotherapist practice moves to Birmingham

Megan Gunnell, a psychotherapist in private practice, recently relocated her practice to Birmingham in the building at 999 Hayne St.

Gunnell was formerly the co-director of the Center for Creative Living in Royal Oak and part of the PsychOncology team for the University of Michigan's Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Gunnell is a holistic-minded psychotherapist offering treatment for depression and anxiety, specializing in women's issues, couples therapy, life transitions, relationships, grief and loss in particular.

Axis Music Academy sponsoring Young Artist Competition as part of grand opening

Young artists who would like to have their works displayed at one of Birmingham's newest businesses should start getting creative.

Coinciding with the grand opening of the , opening at 283 Hamilton Row on Wednesday, the Axis Music Academy and Axis Music Foundation will be kicking off its Young Artist Competition.

Applications from students in grades K-12 are invited to submit their original artwork on a 2-feet-by-2-feet canvas. Winners will receive special prizes as well as the chance to have their work displayed at Axis Music Academy. The theme of the contest: "learn to rock."

Entry forms for the competition must be submitted on site between by Feb. 14. Artwork is due by March 31 and the winners will be announced April 4. For more information about the contest, contact Andrea George at 248-258-9100.

Wednesday, the Axis Music Academy officially opens with a special ribbon cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. The public is invited to check out the shop all day, with a special VIP party from 4-7 p.m. Attendees are eligible for special prize giveaways, including a guitar and month's worth of free lessons. Also available will be special discounts on music class enrollment and gear from Guitar Center.
