Former funeral home to be turned into senior living complex

The former William R. Hamilton Funeral Home at 820 E. Maple Rd. will soon be transformed into a 135-unit senior housing complex.

According to Crains Detroit, the deal was closed by the Southfield-based Etkin Equities LLC and the Farmington-based Beztak Properties. The asking price for the building was $2.4 million.

Doug Etkin, of Etkin Equities, told Crains the cost to develop the property is expected to be more than $23 million and construction will soon be under way once city approval is met. The renovation project is expected to take 18 months.

"Birmingham is the perfect site for an independent living facility because of the very strong demographics of the Bloomfield-Birmingham market," Samuel Beznos of Bextak Properties told Crains. "Seniors want to live close to where they grew up, and downtown living can help them stay active both physically and mentally while enjoying all of the retail, restaurant and community amenties of Birmingham."

Two newcomers in the Birmingham business community celebrated their arrival recently with ribbon cuttings sponsored by the .

Advanced Bodywork opened its doors at 1775 E. 14 Mile Rd. This unorthodox chiropractor and rehab center utilizes the use of Bowenwork to order to help patients heal without the use of twisting, massage oils or acupuncture needles.

"Bowenwork is all about balancing your body with precise techniques that stimulate your body to relax and repair itself," said Bowenwork founder and Advanced Bodywork owner Mark Rogers. "And it doesn't take three times a week or a month or two, like physical therapy."

Also new to the Birmingham business scene is , another chiropractor also located at 1775 14 Mile Rd. The practice is headed up by Dr. Laura Vanloon.

"I believe every individual is different and that health is a process and not an event," said Vanloon. "I practice chiropractic in a manner that intends to balance the body physically, emotionally and energetically."

Downtown photo studio closes

, located at 231 Willits Alley, has closed. The company first opened their Birmingham studio in 2001, though the photography business will still operate out of their offices in Toronto, Canada.

Owner Paunch Kalia told Downtown Publications the closure is due to the economy.

"It was basically down to the amount of business we were doing there," Kalia said, noting he is reviewing the company's client base in Michigan and may reopen elsewhere.
