Best Thing We Ate This Week: Ice Cream from Dairy Mat

With continuous hot weather, it seems all I've been able to think about lately is ice cream.

When it's this hot, when the nights have been this clear, what's better for dessert, mid-day snack or before-dinner treat than a cone from one of Birmingham's ice cream shops?

Ice cream has been on my brain a lot lately and I've been indulging whenever I can. Monday evening's beautiful sunset was a good excuse to take a long walk to the on Woodward and enjoy a vanilla ice cream cone, dipped in rainbow sprinkles. I like all kinds of ice cream, and nothing says summer like soft serve — particularly soft serve and sprinkles.

The Dairy Mat has a large menu and affordable prices, adding to its retro, small-town feel. It's always popular — I've been there in the middle of the day and during prime, after-dinner dessert hours, and there's always a line. Just make sure to bring cash; the Dairy Mat doesn't take plastic.
