Best Thing We Ate This Week: Commonwealth Brunch

Is there a better way to start your weekend than brunch?

Sleepy Saturday mornings just seem to cry out for lazy brunches, and nowhere is this more true than in Birmingham. After sleeping in a bit last weekend, I decided to walk into down and hit up one of my favorite cafes for its yet-untried-by-me brunch menus: .

While my fiance picked the "lunch" part of "brunch," I went with a choice from the menu's long roster of breakfast choices: the buttermilk waffles. There's something about waffles that I like so much better than pancakes, and Commonwealth's did not disappoint. Paired with a mocha, it was a perfect late-morning meal while we sat next to the floor-to-ceiling windows and gazed out on Hamilton Row. Commonwealth's prices are affordable, considering the meal feels gourmet, and you simply can't beat the atmosphere — the place quickly filled up with Birmingham-area regulars as morning became noon.

We gazed so long that we ended up going to a movie at the , but luckily, we were full enough from brunch that we didn't even need popcorn.
