Suspect Caught in Birmingham Bank Robbery

Birmingham police said the suspect hid in the bushes at a nearby church until officers spotted him.

Birmingham police officers arrested a man suspected of robbing the Comerica Bank at 1712 West Maple Rd. early Monday morning, a news release stated. Investigators described him as combative and said they had not identified the man at the time of the release, but said they believed he entered the bank branck at about 9:20 a.m. and pointed a handgun at a teller. He took an undisclosed amount of cash and ran south from the bank across Maple, when a responding officer spotted him, the release stated.

The officer chased him into a nearby backyard and lost sight of him. At about 10:45 a.m., Birmingham officers found him in the bushes behind the First Presbyterian Church. Police found a bag with the stolen money and a loaded handgun in his possession.

Officers from Beverly Hills, Southfield, Bloomfield Township, Troy and Berkley Police Departments assisted with creating a perimeter, and authorities locked down Seaholm High School, the BASCC Senior Center, and two daycare centers in the area.
