Be the Critic: Will You Date ‘Undateable,’ NBC Sitcom Set in Oakland County?

Is “Undateable” dateable?

That’s debatable.

The sitcom created by Birmingham native Adam Sztykiel ("Due Date," "Made of Honor") and Bill Lawrence ("Scrubs," "Spin City," "Cougar Town," "Clone High")is set in Ferndale in Oakland County. It debutedThursday on NBC with back-to-back episodes at 9 and 9:30 p.m.

Some critics, including the Los Angeles Times’ Mary McNamara panned it completely. David Weigand of the San Francisco Chronicle called it “refreshingly likable.” It started off clumsy, but got better, HitFix said. Maureen Ryan said on The Huffington Post that she’d go out on a second date.

Sztykiel, a graduate of Groves High School, also teams with two other Oakland County natives, Birmingham Seaholm High School alum Jeff Ingold and Southfield-Lathrup High School grad Randall Winston as producers of the sitcom, The Oakland Press reports.

It’s set mostly at a bar called Justin’s, a fictitious Ferndale bar, where the group spends time trying solve their problems over beers. It’s based on the book “Undateable: 311 Things Guys Do That Guarantee They Won’t Be Dating or Having Sex” by Ellen Rakieten and Anne Coyle, which exposes foibles like showing up for a date in socks and sandals and pleated shorts and shouting “Booya!”

Sztykiel, who spoke with the newspaper’s Megan Semeraz, said the show, is “about a group of guys who are kind of stuck in a rut in their lives and this character Danny (Chris D’Elia) kind of comes into their lives … and kind of shakes things up a little bit and kind of gets themselves out of their comfort zone.”

“Every person kind of goes through an ‘undateable’ period in their lives,” he said.
