Library, Museum Receive Grant for Summer Concert

announced Monday that the library and the have received a $400 grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and the Michigan Humanities Council.

The grant will be used to fund the library and museum's second annual Musical Heritage Concert on June 24 at the museum on West Maple Road.

The concert, featuring Planet D Nonet under the direction of R.J. Spangler, is a combined concert and lecture in tribute to Detroit's pre-Motown musical roots. The St. Clair Shores-based Planet D Nonet performs acoustic, jazz and swing music in concerts throughout Metro Detroit.

The group will perform "Parade Valley Walk," which showcases early swing music from the 1920s and 1930s. The show also highlights the musical links to R&B and jump blues of the late 1940s and into the 1950s by featuring the music of Paul "Hucklebuck" Williams, King Porter, T.J. Fowler and Todd Rhodes.

"We are pleased to partner with the museum on this event and are grateful for the support from the Michigan Council for Arts and the Michigan Humanities Council," said Matt Church, associate director of Baldwin Public Library.

This past summer's Musical Heritage Concert featured , which performed "Songs That Made a Nation" on Aug. 7 in honor of Birmingham's role in the Civil War.
