Birmingham Bloomfield Symphony Orchestra: The Glory of Rachmaninoff

Mendelssohn: Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Mozart: Symphony No. 36 in C (“Linz”)
Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor

The BBSO presents three popular classics in this exciting opener to the 38th season, conducted by Charles Greenwell. We’ll begin the evening with Mendelssohn’s overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Written when the composer was just 17 years old, the work has received praise for its beauty and successful translation of Shakespeare’s spirit world into that of sound. Concluding the first half will be Mozart’s Symphony No. 36 (“Linz”), a majestic work that soars with propulsive rhythms and melodic vigor, yet was penned in less than a week by the newlywed Mozart. The concert’s second half features Rachmaninoff’s beautiful Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor with solo pianist, David Syme. In concerts around the world, Syme has received praise for his performances and has been called “nothing shy of spectacular.”
