Community House Announces a Fall Full of Art, Music and Theater

From calligraphy to musical theater, there's a class for every art lover this fall at The Community House.

You don't have to go back to school this fall to learn something new.

Birmingham's has announced a line-up of classes and lecture series for the fall, all of which explore the world of art, music and theater.

Music

Music Lecture Series

The Community House will offer a three-part music lecture series beginning Sept. 6 on Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart. Individual sessions are $36; the three-part series is available to attend for $99.

  • Understanding Late Beethoven — 6:30-8 p.m. Sept. 6
    This session explores the circumstances of Ludwig Van Beethoven's later life, as well as analyze one work in details with demonstration on the keyboard as well as recorded examples.
  • The Intimate Brahms — 6:30-8 p.m. Oct. 4
    This session will explore the role of chamber music in Johannes Brahms' life, the composer known for writing small ensembles and for destroyng more than two-thirds of the music he produced. The session wil also do a "deep dive" analysis of one of his favorite pieces.
  • Mozart's Pure Genius — 6:30-8 p.m. Nov. 1
    This session will use Wolfgag Amadeus Mozart's Clarinet Quintet as a launching pad for an exploration of what makes his music so "exquisitely perfect and beautiful."

Beginning Adult Piano — Wednesdays beginning 1-2:30 p.m. Sept. 12

Learning to play piano can be a challenge, no matter what your age. Taught in a classroom setting, this class will give students a chance to learn from each other. Focus will be on basic music skills, including note reading and finding your way around the keyboard — perfect for new students as well as those looking to brush up on their music skills.

Eight sessions cost $163.

Art

Chinese Brush Painting — Mondays beginning 6:30-9 p.m. Sept. 24

In this course, participants wil learn basic Chinese characters, brush techniques as well as how to paint bamboo, cherry blossoms and chrysanthemums. In addition, students will paint a still life using brush techniques and make his or her own Chinese seal/chop to sign their paintings.

The five session-class costs $123.

Zentangle 101 — 7-9 p.m. Sept. 18

Zentangle is an easy to learn, relaxing method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns and provides a fun way to relax. The materials are simple, low-tech and inexpensive. Zentangle is a method of using pen and paper to create surprising and unexpected works of art, support relaxation, focus, inspiration and a sense of well-being.

The class costs $42.

Art Works: Mixed Media and Collage — Mondays beginning 9:30-11:45 a.m. Sept. 24

Add fresh, playful possibilities to your artwork with collages and mixed media to move your creations beyond the boundaries of traditional art. This class's experimentation with varied art methods is appropriate for all skill levels. Learn how to use collage and mixed media techniques to stir your imagination and foster creativity.

Seven sessions cost $123.

Calligraphy: Foundational Alphabet — Tuesdays beginning 1-3:30 p.m. Sept. 25

Beginning and continuing students will enjoy learning this most basic and versatile calligraphic hand. Clear, round, easy-to-read letterforms make the Foundational Alphabet adaptable for many uses. The class will experiment with color, a variety of tools and design applications.

Ten sessions cost $123.

Theater

Musical Theater Performance for Adults: The Songs of Broadway — Wednesdays beginning 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sept. 12

This vocal performance, technique and style class allows students to study, rehearse and perform repertoire from the musical theater canon. Vocal technique and stylistic interpretation are taught through solo and group work. The class culminates with a final caberet performances. Students will study works from: Jerome Kern, George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Kandler and Ebb, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Stephen Sondheim, Jason Robert Brown and Addam Guettel.

An eight-session class costs $135.
