Birmingham resident Sarah Scherb is headed to Hollywood to continue her dream of making it big in the music industry as part of the FOX Network's American Idol.

Scherb, 19, convinced the panel of celebrity judges on the hit show to be among the 20 contestants at the Detroit auditions to advance with her unique and powerful singing style. The local auditions aired Wednesday night.

"I love to sing and perform," the University of Toronto student said in a promotional video released by the network after Wednesday's broadcast.  The experience of auditioning -- and making it to Hollywood -- prompted her to cry tears of happiness for the first time in her life, she said.

"It was the craziest thing I've ever done in my whole life," she said. "It was so much emotion, and adrenaline."

The show's Hollywood audition week is set to air in February.
