Volunteer in Dearborn for the Holidays (and Beyond)

There's no better time to give back to your community than the holiday season.

Volunteering in Dearborn is a great way to give back to others and spread holiday cheer and warmth in your community.

Donating your time or giving a special holiday gift to a family or child in need can make a big impact.

There are lots of ways to help make the holidays truly special for those who are less fortunate. Here are a few places that are in need of holiday volunteers (and beyond) in Dearborn:

Dearborn Animal Shelter: The holidays are the busiest time of year for the shelter, and extra help is always needed. Learn more about becoming a volunteer at www.dearbornanimals.org/volunteer.

Friends of the Rouge: The local nonprofit will be hosting its annual stonefly search on Jan. 26, but they need you to sign up! Teams will depart from Dearborn and search in streams along the Rouge. Learn more at therouge.org.

ACCESS: The Dearborn community center is always looking for volunteers to help with events, tutoring and other opportunities. Get started on the ACCESS website.

Gleaners Community Food Bank: The Southeast Michigan organization's Bringing Hope to the Table program runs Saturdays in January at participating Kroger stores—including all three in Dearborn. Sign up here to help out. You can also make donations to Gleaners at the Adoba Hotel Dearborn.

Join a Service Group: The Dearborn Rotary Club, Dearborn Outer Drive Kiwanis, Dearborn Goodfellows and Kiwanis Club of Dearborn are always accepting new members. All four groups engage in a number of service projects throughout the year, helping local youth and others in need.

How do you give of your time and money in Dearborn?

I try my best through out the year donating to St. Jude, D.A.V., GoodWill, Purple Heart and The American Red Cross. At my place of work(Dr. Evonne Kakos) we pick a patient or family every Christmas to donate a gift basket of goods and donate to the food box that is placed in our waiting room from Sacred Heart Church. I find myself very blessed w/Family, Friends, home, job and food. Every little bit helps and if I can be a blessing to someone then thats what counts. Merry Christmas Dearborn!
