Staying Cool at the Birmingham Farmers Market

Beat the heat at the Birmingham Farmers Market this summer with Rickey Jasgur and his snow served in a cup.

The Birmingham Farmers Market, which continues its 11th season Sunday, draws fun and interesting characters to town every year. Among them are Rickey Jasgur of Hayden Confection, who helps keep things cool with flavorful snow cones.

On a hot day, just follow the line forming outside one of the noisier vendor tents and you'll find Jasgur churning away at an ice shaver, creating the foundation for one of his signature rainbow-colored treats.

"I may go through 100 pounds easy, sometimes more," Jasgur said when asked about the amount of ice he'll cycle through the machine during a single day at the market.

Visit Jasgur and others each week at the Farmers Market, which runs from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. every Sunday at municipal Parking Lot 6, north of Harmon on the east side of North Old Woodward Avenue, across from Booth Park. For more information, visit birminghamfarmersmarket.org.
