Seaholm Carjacking Got Birmingham Talking

Birmingham Patch readers share opinions, emotions, statistics, and more in response to the shocking crime at Seaholm High School.

The armed carjacking of a Seaholm High School custodian last week drew lots of opinions from Birmingham residents and readers of Birmingham Patch.

From gun control and crime rates to the urban/suburban divide, readers covered a wide array of topics that came to mind as the story developed. Detroit resident Roland Javondeshawn Hubbard, 18, is charged with six felonies stemming from the incident, and authorities are searching for a second suspect. Hubbard remains at the Oakland County Jail on $1 million bond.

Some readers commented on the impact of crime tied to Detroit has on the Birmingham community. Others also challenged the Birmingham Public Schools' decision to close the campus for the entire the day.

"This is over the top and overkill by the School District!" Greg Thrasher worte  "This incident took place @5 am ! There was no sound basis to close the school. As a side note this has nothing to do with Detroit. I hope Birmingham does not embrace the stereotypes and myths about crime and Detroit!!!!

"I'm glad no one went to school because there could have been potential danger," Christian James Wilson commented. "Unfortunately the kids are going to blame Detroit for this incident when it clearly is not. I feel bad for the reputation Detroit has in the suburbs when it isn't all that bad."
