Residents Take Advantage of Free Community Shred Day

What took years for many people to accumulate disappeared in seconds during the annual shred day event co-sponsored by the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce.

Local residents shred more than 300 boxes worth of personal and sensitive information this week as part of the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce's free annual shred day.

For three hours Thursday, roughly 100 vehicles pulled into the north lot of Seaholm High School and loaded up to three boxes of personal documents into massive shredders.

What took years to accumulate was gone in a matter of seconds. So quick, in fact, that some people made multiple trips to avoid the three-box limit, organizers said.

The event was sponsored by mBank Birmingham, the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber and E-Shred, a mobile shredding company in an effort to protect residents and businesses against identity theft.

"Everyone understands the importance of keeping financial documents secure," Chamber Joe Bauman said. "In today's world of identity theft it's important that you dont' have sensitive information in the trash."
