Need To Know: Ash Wednesday Services in Birmingham

Learn about Lenten services in and around Birmingham Wednesday.

It's Fat Tuesday today, but that only means tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, a big day for area churches. Here's who's opening their doors for services in Birmingham:

Holy Name Catholic Church

  • Address: 630 Harmon St.
  • Services: Litergy is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. (a school liturgy), noon and 7 p.m. Weekday masses during Lent are scheduled for 8 a.m. Monday-Saturday and noon Wednesday and Friday.
  • Extra: Msgr. John Zenz will speak on "The Drama of Our Redemption" on Feb. 17, Feb. 24, March 3 and March 10. Fish bakes are also scheduled for Feb. 15, March 8 and March 26 in St. Anne's Hall.

St. James Episcopal Church

  • Address: 355 W. Maple Rd.
  • Services: St. James will be offering the Holy Eucharist and imposition of ashes at 7 a.m., noon and 7 p.m.

Our Shepherd Lutheran Church

  • Address: 2225 E. 14 Mile Rd.
  • Services: Our Shepherd will be holding a Lenten service at 7 p.m., with dinner at 5:30 p.m.

First United Methodist Church of Birmingham

  • Address: 1589 W. Maple Rd.
  • Services: Worship is offered every hour, on the hour, from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. in the Runkel Chapel. Each 30-minute service includes hymms, a meditation and Holy Communion.
  • Extra: United Methodist Women will hold a Ash Wednesday brunch and service, with communion in the sanctuary at 9 a.m. and brunch following the service. The event costs $5 at the door. The church will also host an Empty Bowls Soup Supper from 5-8 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Tickets are available for $10 per person, or $25 per family.

First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham

  • Address: 1669 W. Maple Rd.
  • Services: Ash Wednesday services will be held at noon and 7 p.m.
  • Extra: A soup lunch will follow the noon service.

Lutheran Church of the Redeemer

  • Address: 1800 W. Maple Rd.
  • Services: Lenten services begin on Ash Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. and run for the next six weeks.
