Merrill, Pierce Block Party Brings Birmingham Residents, Businesses Out

The extensive redesign of Pierce and Merrill Streets in downtown Birmingham is finished.

Pierce and Merrill Streets were again closed in downtown Birmingham Saturday, but not because of construction.

Just a day after officially opening for vehicle and foot traffic after months of reconstruction, the block at the heart of downtown was shutdown for a celebration that drew businesses and appreciative residents outdoors.

"This is great, and to have it closed for the kids to play around here safely is really nice," said Celeste Feenstra, who rode bicycles downtown with her son for a haircut and stayed for the block party.

The Pierce street reconstruction between Maple Road and Merrill Street started in March, and included new street construction, water main removals, new sidewalks, parking meters, street lamps and tree wells. The Pierce Street portion reopened in early June.

City officials opened the Merrill Street intersection late Friday.

"We're happy to see the streets back. It's a beautiful day, the women are out shopping, and we ove being outside," said Joy Papple of the ArtLoft.
