Honoring the Fallen on Memorial Day in Birmingham

How do you pay tribute to those that fell during service to our country today?

Many went off overseas to protect the United States of America and never returned, whether in times of war or times of peace Many members of the military that did survive didn't receive a proper welcome home.

No matter the circumstances, Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made willingly by generations of men and women that serve, said Steve Stevens, commander of the Birmingham-Troy American Legion Post #14.

"It's an important time and honor for us, because we're paying our respects and showing the community that we can still contribute something to the community even though our service is over," Stevens said. "This is what we're about. Letting the people see us and serve as a reminder of all those who serve this country every day, and especially the ones who made the ultimate sacrifice and couldn't be here."
